Hunting Hills Lightning teams brace for playoffs

The Hunting Hills Lightning girls are ranked 12th heading into the Alberta high school 4A basketball championships, which open Thursday in Raymond and Cardston.

The Lightning face Cardston in their opening game at 5 p.m. Thursday in Cardston.

Meanwhile on the boys’ side, the Lightning are ranked 14th and meet Calgary’s Western Canada at 9 p.m. Thursday in Raymond.

Harry Ainlay of Edmonton is ranked No. 1 on the girls’ side while defending provincial champion Raymond is tops in the boys’ division.,

The girls’ championships take place in Cardston, except for the medal games and the B final, which goes Saturday at the University of Lethbridge. The boys play in Raymond with the A semifinals and final, the third-place game and the B final at the U of L.

The girls’ championship game is set for 6 p.m. with the boys to follow.

• Camrose and Wetaskiwin will represent the Central Alberta zone in both the girls’ and boys’ 3A finals in Medicine Hat.

Camrose is ranked No. 4 in the girls’ division and receive a bye and will meet the winner of the Highwood-Bishop Carroll game Friday at 10 a.m. Wetaskiwin faces Peace Wapiti of Grande Prairie at 2 p.m. Thursday.

On the boys’ side, Camrose is ranked second and also receives a bye, facing the winner if the host Crescent Heights and Ardrossan contest at noon Friday.

Wetaskiwin opens Thursday at noon against Holy Rosary of Lloydminster.

• The Rimbey Spartans go into the boys’ 2A finals in Daysland ranked eighth and face Peace River in their opening game at 12:45 p.m. Thursday.

Daysland is ranked fifth and opens at 11 a.m. Thursday against Kitscoty.

The final is set for Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

l Central Alberta will be represented by Viking in the girls’ 2A finals in Hanna.

Viking opens against Prairie Christian of Three Hills at 4:15 p.m. Thursday.

• The Bentley Panthers will compete in the boys’ division of the 1A championships at St. Jerome’s Catholic School in Vermilion.

The Panthers open Thursday at 5 p.m. against Calgary Clear Water Academy.

Forestburg faces Parkland Immanuel of Edmonton at 1 p.m. Thursday.

The final is slated for 7 p.m. Saturday.

On the girls’ side, Ryley and Daysland will represent Central Alberta.

Daysland clashes with Clear Water Academy at 11 a.m. Thursday while Ryley received a bye and meets the winner of the Foremost-E.H. Walter contest at 11 a.m. Friday.

Trochu, who represents the South Central zone, also received a bye and takes on the winner of the St. Jermone and Parkland Immanuel contest at 9 a.m. Friday.

The final goes Saturday at 5 p.m.
