Isabel Anthony and Benjamin House named RDP Athletes of the Week

They both had impressive performances

Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics have announced their Athletes of the Week after the opening weekend of the 2023-24 academic year.

Isabel Anthony of Queens soccer and Benjamin House of the Kings cross country team were crowned after impressive performances over the weekend.

Anthony scored twice in two games to begin the Queens Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) season 1-1 on the road last weekend.

The first came against the Lethbridge College Kodiaks on Saturday, cutting into their opponent’s lead. The Kodiaks ultimately won the game 2-1 in Lethbridge.

However, Anthony kept her momentum going on Sunday when she opened the scoring against the Medicine Hat Rattlers. The Queens took the road game in Medicine Hat 2-1.

Head Coach Mahziar Peyrow explained he was shocked by the rookie’s performance.

“She was recommended to me later in the recruiting season by the Edmonton Scottish Angels coach,” he said in a media release.

“She has been performing very well at training, but she unleashed something in her this weekend. I’m definitely excited to see what else she can do.”

The Queens are back in action this Saturday for the home opener against the Alberta-Augustana Vikings and on Sunday at SAIT against the Trojans.

House began his season off with a bang finishing in fourth place in the first Running Room Grand Prix of the season at Concordia University in Edmonton.

The second year recorded a time of 29:23 which helped the Kings take the top spot in the ACAC standings heading into the next event this weekend in Calgary.

Head coach Doug Spicer said House has a great season ahead of him.

“He has ambitious goals which, if you know him, you can be confident he will reach,” he said.

“His leadership skills made him a great choice as captain of our Kings team this year. He continues to show great maturity for his age and is a great pleasure to work with.”

The Kings and Queens’ cross-country teams will head to the second meet of the season in Calgary at SAIT this weekend.
