Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics have named Queens' track runner Justine Larson and Kings rodeo athlete Casey Thomson the Athletes of the Week.

Larson, a fourth-year bachelor of education student, dominated on the cross-country trails on Saturday at Grand Prix No. 4 at St. Mary's University.

The Strathmore native finished sixth in the six-kilometre race in a time of 26:17 and was also the first Queens runner to cross the finish line. As a result, the Queens finished second in the fourth Grand Prix com[petition after all the results were tallied.

This season Larson has consistently finished in the top 10 of her races and will look to continue that trend on Oct. 12 when they head to Grand Prix No. 5 at the Alberta-Augustana campus in Camrose.

Thomson, a third-year electrician apprentice, continued to impress on the college rodeo circuit last weekend as a bareback bronc rider.

The Longview, Alta. product scored a 76 on Saturday at the Northern Lights College Rodeo in Dawson Creek, B.C. On Sunday, he secured a first-place finish after scoring a 73 to wrap up the weekend.

Thomson made his season debut two weeks ago on the Canadian Collegiate Rodeo Association (CCRA) at the Vermillion Ag Society Rodeo where he also took home first place on Saturday and Sunday.

He'll look to continue that success when the Kings and Queens rodeo team head to Vermillion for the Lakeland College Fall Classic from October 12-13.
