The Red Deer Rebels got a lift Tuesday night when they needed it most from three of the team’s most important players this season.

On the road in Swift Current, with the game tied at two early in the third period, Rebels goalie Chase Coward slid across the crease to rob Broncos’ forward Josh Davies.

In the 5-2 victory, Coward finished the night with 27 saves, including 10 in the third period to earn first star honours, in his hometown no less.

Less a minute after the highlight reel stop, Arshdeep Bains slipped a loose puck past Broncos goalie Reid Dyck. Ben King fired a sharp-angle shot that missed the net and bounced right out in front to Bains, for his 19th goal of the year. It was Bains’ fifth game-winning goal this season.

It was King’s turn 3:10 later, on the power play the 19-year-old sniped his league-leading 29th goal of the year, his 15th power-play tally, which also leads the WHL.

Bains also set up Liam Keeler’s insurance marker as the buzzer sounded in the third period, for his second point of the night. The 20-year-old has 55 points in 40 games this year.

The Rebels were two-for-six on the power play and the Broncos went one-for-seven on the advantage in the loss.

The two teams will renew acquaintances on Friday night when the Broncos visit the Peavey Mart Centrium, with puck drop set for 7 p.m.
