Kings earn fourth at cross country nationals

Jenica Swartz finishes fourth individually, Queens end up 10th

Red Deer Polytechnic Queens second-year runner Jenica Swartz had a wild weekend.

Swartz played for the Queens soccer team at Nationals in Quebec on Wednesday and Thursday, scoring one of the Queens’ two goals in the tournament, before returning home to Alberta.

Saturday morning, she was on the course at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association National Cross Country Championships, competing for the Queens in a different capacity.

She finished just off the podium fourth in the six-kilometre race in Medicine Hat, with a time of 23:24. The Lacombe product was also named to the All-Canadian Cross-Country Saturday night.

The Queens finished 10th place overall in Canada with a total of 148 points. The Elans de Garneau of the RSEQ out of Quebec were crowned CCAA National Champions with 40 points in the women’s division.

The Kings were led by fourth-year Daniel Szucs, who finished 17th with a time of 26:50 which helped the team to a fourth overall finish, just missing the podium with 86 points.

Other notable finishes from the Kings and Queens are Justine Larson, finishing 54th place with a time of 26:07 and Ethan Duret finished in 21st place with a time of 27:20.
