Kuemper returns

The Red Deer Rebels’ projected No. 1 goalkeeper for the 2010-11 WHL season will be back with the team today.

The Red Deer Rebels’ projected No. 1 goalkeeper for the 2010-11 WHL season will be back with the team today. Darcy Kuemper has been returned to the Rebels by the Minnesota Wild, who selected the Saskatoon native in the 2009 NHL entry draft. Kuemper, a 20-year-old, was playing for a pro contract while at the Wild camp this fall, but the NHL club has a number of goaltenders already signed to pro deals and still have until next June to get Kuemper’s name on a contract. “The people in Minnesota said he had a real good camp. They said he arrived in great shape and played with a lot of confidence,” Rebels head coach/VP of hockey operations Jesse Wallin said Wednesday evening. “But they feel he needs another year of junior hockey and they fully expect that he’ll come back and carry that on here.” Kuemper will likely get the start Friday when the Rebels open their regular-season schedule in Edmonton against the Oil Kings. Last season with the Rebels Kuemper posted a 28-23-0-4 record with a 2.73 goals against average and a 0.908 save percentage and seven shut outs while leading the team to a playoff berth.
