A central Alberta amateur golfer separated himself from the pack during the RBC Canadian Open Regional Qualifier in Calgary on Monday.

Lacombe’s Brady McKinlay, who plays golf at Utah Valley University, was the only golfer to finish the day even-par or better during the qualifier at Mickelson National Golf Club.

He also finished the day with medallist honours in the province’s final qualifier for the tournament. He knocked in two birdies on hole one, five and 16, which helped him save par on the day after bogeying the third hole and a double bogey on hole 11.

However, since there were less than 100 competitors he did not get an exemption into the RBC Canadian Open. He will play in the final qualifier at Oakdale Golf and Country Club on June 6 where a minimum of four players will qualify.
