Karis Langvand of Red Deer placed sixth in the junior women’s epee event and was seventh in the senior women’s epee in the Canadian Fencing Federation Winter Nationals at Ottawa.
Langvand reached the quarter-finals of the junior women’s epee before losing to Canadian national team member Kinga Kovacs of Calgary.
Langvand then had a rough start in the senior women’s event, losing four of her first six bouts before racking up numerous victories — including one over top-seeded Joanne Kolbe — before falling 14-9 to former national team fencer Daria Jorquera-Palmer of Manitoba in the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, Langvand’s Red Deer Fencing Club teammate, Karren Lyver, attended the competition despite suffering an ankle injury last week and placed 45th in the senior women’s epee.
