Lightning, Spartans to play for bronze

A pair of Central Alberta teams are playing for bronze following the opening day of the Alberta high school rugby championships Friday.

CALGARY — A pair of Central Alberta teams are playing for bronze following the opening day of the Alberta high school rugby championships Friday.

The Hunting Hills Lightning will face Sturgeon in the boys’ tier I bronze medal match at 2:30 p.m. while the Rimbey Spartans will take on Highwood in the tier II girls’ third-place contest at 10 a.m..

The Lightning opened with a 7-5 win over Edmonton McNally before losing to Medicine Hat (score unavailable).

Medicine Hat will face Strathcona in the final.

The Spartans opened with a 23-0 win over Springbank before dropping a 12-0 decision to F.P. Walshe of Fort McLead.

F.P. Walshe will face top-ranked County Central of Vulcan in the final.

The Notre Dame Cougars will meet Edmonton’s Ross Sheppard in the tier I girls’ consolation final at 1 p.m. while the West Central Rebels of Rocky Mountain House takes on Beaumont in the tier II boys’ consolation final at 11:30 a.m.

The Cougars lost 17-12 to Strathcona in their opening game before beating Foothills of Okotoks 24-5. Ross Sheppard lost to Bev Facey of Sherwood Park and downed Strathcona 34-0.

Raymond and Sturgeon advanced to the tier I final.

The Rebels dropped a 17-12 decision to Strathcona-Tweedsmuir before destroying Cold Lake 76-0.

Beaumont lost 10-3 to F.P. Walshe and downed Parkland 12-7.

Winston Churchilll of Lethbridge meets Banff in the final.
