A pair of central Alberta junior hockey players will get the chance to wear the maple leaf later this month.

Beginning on Monday, Red Deer’s Ty Daneault and Blackfalds Bulldogs defenceman Tanner Willick will join 61 other Canadian Junior Hockey Players at the Team Canada selection camp for the 2022 World Junior A Challenge.

From Dec. 5-7 in Cornwall, Ont. both Daneault and Willick will try out for Team Canada West in hopes to crack the roster while half of the other invitees compete for a spot on Team Canada East. During the camp, they’ll play two intrasquad games before the final rosters are named.

Both teams will contain some of the best Canadian Junior Hockey League players in the country. The coaching staff invited players from all nine of the CJHL’s leagues in western and eastern Canada including the NOJHL, OJHL, CCHL, LHJAAAQ, MHL, AJHL, SJHL, MJHL, and the SIJHL.

If named to the roster they’ll compete in the tournament that’ll take place at the Cornwall Civic Complex from Dec. 11-18.

Daneault, who plays for the Drumheller Dragons of the AJHL has 19 goals and 14 assists for 33 points this season so far in 26 games. This is the 17-year-olds second season in the AJHL after he played two seasons with the U18 AAA Red Deer Chiefs.

Willick was acquired by the Bulldogs in a trade with the Drumheller Dragons in the offseason. In his first year in Blackfalds, he’s fired in three goals and 26 assists for 29 points in 28 games.

Also on the roster is Lacombe’s Clayton Jardine who will serve as one of three assistant coaches alongside bench boss Justin Falk.

The international showcase will have the two Canadian teams alongside Latvia, the United States, and Sweden.
