U18s win provincials

LETHBRIDGE — The Red Deer Renegades captured gold at the U18 Tier II boys’ provincial soccer championships for the second year in a row Sunday.

The Renegades overcame a 2-0 deficit to edge the Sunny South Strikers 3-2 in the final.

The Renegades needed to battle ever step of the way just to get to the final. They trailed in every game by at least one goal.

They tied Calgary Tercero 2-2 and Lakeland United 1-1 in their pool, but squeezed through to the semifinals where they edged Calgary Segundo 2-1 to advance to the final.


United earn silver

LETHBRIDGE — Red Deer United captured second place in the provincial U18 Tier II girls’ soccer championships Sunday.

The United squad dropped a 2-1 decision to the top-seeded Calgary Blizzard Avalanche in the gold medal game.

Tayler Letwin scored the lone Red Deer goal with five minutes remaining in the second half.

Earlier Red Deer tied the Calgary Willowridge Mustangs 2-2 and beat the Edmonton Xtreme 10-0 and North West Central Selects 5-0.

Claire Wallace and Moira Duley scored against the Mustangs after the Calgary squad built up a 2-0 lead. Wallace added four goals against the Xtreme with Laura Gosselin and Kayla Rogers adding two each and Rachel Gaudry and Duley one apiece.

Wallace scored twice against the Selects with singles added by Gosselin, Duley and Sara Codd.

Keeper Lauren Good was solid all weekend.


U14s finish in ninth

Both Red Deer teams finished ninth in the provincial U14 Tier II soccer championships at Edgar Park Sunday.

The Red Deer Renegades won twice om the final day of the three-day affair to take ninth in the girls’ division, beating the Medicine Hat Crusaders 4-0 and the Calgary Angels 3-1.

Sydney Daines scored all four goals for the Renegades against the Crusaders while Selma Halilic had a pair of goals and Laryssa Ubels one against Calgary.

The Edmonton Strikers took the gold with a 2-1 win over the Grande Prairie Wolves while the Cochrane Wolves captured third place with a 2-1 win over the Sherwood Park Phoenix.

The Red Deer United squad won the ninth-place game on the boys’ side with a 1-0 win over Medicine Hat on a goal by Spencer Yeats.

The Calgary Blizzard Strikers dumped the Spruce Grove Saints 1-0 in the final while the Calgary Warriors downed Sherwood Park 3-0 in the bronze medal match.


Indians take title

The Innisfail Indians are the Parkland Baseball League champions.

The Indians captured the title with an 11-6 win over the Beiseker Canadians in Beiseker Friday, winning the best-of-three championship final 2-0.
