Rebels to open training camp
The Red Deer Rebels open their training camp Sunday at the Centrium.
The rookies will skate Sunday and Monday at 8:30 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. and Tuesday only at 8:30 a.m. The main group is set for Sunday through Tuesday at 10:30 and 11:45 a.m.
A main scrimmage is set for Sunday and Monday at 4:45 p.m. with a Black and White game Tuesday at 5 p.m.
The main McDonald’s Black and White game is set for Wednesday at 7 p.m. with tickets available at participating McDonald’s locations in Red Deer.
The Rebels will open their six-game preseason schedule Aug. 29 at 3 p.m. in St. Albert against the Moose Jaw Warriors. They clash with the Calgary Hitmen at Calgary’s Centennial Arena Sept, 2, take on the Edmonton Oil Kings Sept 4 in Stettler and Sept. 5 in Leduc, meet the Kootenay Ice Sept. 11 in Innisfail and the finish their preseason Sept. 12 in Lacombe against the Hitmen.
Raab named RDC curling coach
Eldon Raab has been named the new RDC curling coach.
Raab, who is the manager of the Red Deer Curling Centre, takes over from Sean Noble.
Raab, who is a former member of the RDC Kings basketball team, comes into the program with five years of level II coaching experience and over 20 years of competitive curling.
Braves go 1-3 at championships
SURREY, B.C. — The Red Deer Boston Pizza Braves posted a 1-3 record at the Western Canadian bantam AA Tier I baseball championships during the weekend.
The Braves, who won the Alberta title, lost 3-2 to Surrey, 4-2 to Manitoba, 8-1 to eventual tournament champion Swift Current and beat Victoria 5-4.
The Braves opened against Surrey and held a 2-1 into the fifth only to see Surrey score once in the bottom of the sixth and once in the seventh.
Dylan Hollman started on the mound and allowed two hits over 3 1/3 innings with Jeff Ireland going the rest of the way and taking the loss, although he gave up just three hits.
Offensively the Braves managed just five hits with Hollman and Stephon Fountain, who was the Red Deer player of the game, each collecting a hit and scoring once.
The Braves fell behind early to Manitoba as starter Chaz Piché allowed four runs on four hits in 1 1/3 innings. Joe Ireland came on and was the player of the game, as he tossed shutout ball over the final 4 2/3 innings.
The Braves offence continued to struggle, especially in the seventh when they loaded the bases with none away.
Logan Marshall and Hollman had two hits each for the Braves.
Player of the game Dustin Horvey of Beaumont, the Braves only pick up, started on the mound against Swift Current and allowed three hits over three innings, but five Red Deer errors opened the flood gates for the Saskatchewan champions. The Braves finished with six singles from six different players.
The Braves final contest against Victoria was their best of the tournament.
Starter Reid Stoyberg took a no-hitter into the fifth before giving way to reliever Horvey. Joe Ireland Hollman followed on the mound.
The Braves broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to grab a 4-3 lead.
However. Victoria tied the game in the seventh, sending it into an extra inning. After Hollman retired the side in the top of the eighth, Stoyberg reached first on an error, stole second and third and scored the winning run when the B.C. third baseman fumbled the throw from the catcher on the steal.
Anand Aggarwal was the Red Deer player of the game as he had an RBI single, walked once, scored once and was solid on defence.
Fountain had a run and an RBI single and Joe Ireland a pair of walks.
