Two members of the major midget female hockey Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs will suit up for Team Alberta in the Canada Winter Games Feb. 11-27 at Halifax.

Defencemen Taryn Baumgardt of Innisfail and Hannah Mousek of Olds have been named to the provincial team, while Michael Kraichy of Red deer will serve as the director of operations.

Trevor Keeper of Red Deer will serve as head coach of the provincial under-15 boys team for the Winter Games.


Craven advances to provincials

Merle Craven’s Red Deer Curling Centre mixed foursome advanced to the Alberta 55 Plus provincials at St. Albert in February with a 7-5 win over Al Radford of Sylvan Lake.

Other members of the team are third Beulah Johnston, second Gerry Cain and lead Lyn Cain.


Wranglers blank Bolts

Layne Swier turned in a flawless 41-save performance Tuesday as the host Blackfalds Wranglers beat the Stettler Lightning 4-0 in a Heritage Junior B Hockey League game.

Kyle Maas scored twice and Chance Abbott and Jared Williams each notched a goal against Lightning netminder Simon Thieleman, who stopped 33 shots. The Wranglers were assessed five of eight minor penalties.


Bulldogs bite Royals

Michael Kearl drained 15 points Tuesday to lead the Bulldogs to a 94-66 Central Alberta Senior Men’s Basketball Association win over the RDC Royals.

Brendon Ross scored 11 for the Royals.
