Seven selected to represent Red Deer lacrosse at nationals
Seven members of the Red Deer Lacrosse Association will compete in the national championships.
Two players out of the bantam girls, bantam boys and midgets made Team Alberta along with Dawson Reykdal of Red Deer in the peewee boys.
Reykdal is a second-year peewee and will compete in the national finals in early August.
Goaltender Katey Carswell and Asia Zurfluh, both of Red Deer, made the bantam girls’ team, which will compete in the nationals in early August in Whitby, Ont.
It’s the first time for the girls to compete at the national level. Both girls play on the bantam mixed and girls’ teams.
The bantam boys — Bobby Hamilton and Ryan Beatson of Red Deer — will also compete at the nationals in Whitby.
Both youngsters are second-year bantams and previously played at the nationals at the peewee level.
The two helped the Red Deer bantam A team to a second-place finish in the Greater Edmonton Lacrosse Council league this season.
The Red Seer midget team also finished second in the Edmonton league.
Eric Reierson of Innisfail and Davis Reykdal of Red Deer are making their second appearance at the nationals. This year’s finals are set for Brampton, Ont., in late August.
Reierson is a second-year midget and competed for Team Alberta last year while Reykdal, a first-year midget, played at the Canadians in peewee.
Going to judo nationals
Six members of the Red Deer Judo Club have qualified to compete in the national junior championships in Calgary.
The six qualified out of a competition at the University of Calgary.
Mark Antonio led the qualifiers with a bronze medal performance in the U17 90-kilogram category while Brendan Thompson was fifth in the U20 90kg division and Jaquina Simao fifth in the U15 56kg class.
Others advancing were Kayla Thompson in the U17 48kg division, Jordan Simao in the U17 73kg category and Cole Hogarth in the U15 66kg class.
Kuehn tied for 15th
STONY PLAIN — Lynn Kuehn of Lacombe is in a tie for 15th following the second round of the Alberta Ladies Amateur Golf championship at the Stony Plain Golf and Country Club Thursday.
Kuehn shot a seven-over par 79 for a 36-hole total of 162, 11 strokes back of Breanne Neufeld of Lethbridge, who had rounds of 77-74.
Jessica Luciuk of Barrhead is second at 77-75—152 with Jen McLean of Edmonton at 77-76—153.
Jocelyn Alford, formerly of Red Deer and now playing out of Calgary, is tied for eighth at 159 following rounds of 76-83.
Sixteen-year-old Cara Vanderham of Innisfail missed the cut with a 182 total.
The tournament, which had the opening round Tuesday rained out, will finish today.
Canadiens beat Sharks
The Canadiens advanced to the Red Deer Ball Hockey League final on by beating the Sharks 6-5 in overtime on Thursday.
Jason Spelt scored the overtime winner for the Canadiens while Kevin Mulder scored a hat trick.
Don Morrison scored twice and added two assists for the Sharks.
The final series between the Canadiens and the Sharks gets underway on Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Kin City A arena.
