Kallis four shots back of first
GRANDE PRAIRIE — Carson Kallis of the Red Deer Golf and Country Club (RDGCC) remained in third place following the third round of the 72-hole Alberta junior boys’ golf championship at the Dunes Thursday, but he did narrow the gap to top spot.
Kallis shot a two-under par 69 for a 213 total, which is four strokes back of Dillon Batsel of Medicine Hat, who shot 68.
Kallis was six strokes back of Scott Lowe of Calgary following the second round. Lowe came in with a 74 Thursday and slipped into second, three back of Batsel.
Jesse Teron and Zak Griffiths of Red Deer are tied for 16th at 224. Teron shot a 76 and Griffiths a 77 Thursday.
John Miller of the RDGCC is tied for 24th at 227 after shooting a 75 while Mitch Bach of Sundre shot a 76 and is tied for 32nd at 228.
Ryan Moore of Ponoka came in with a 79 and is tied for 46th at 232 while Jason Thiels of Olds is tied for 49th at 233 following a 79.
John Sinclair of Red Deer sits in a tie for 57th at 236 after a 78 while Spencer Dorowicz of Olds had an 81 and is tied for 68th at 239.
Clinton McAllister of Stettler shot an 87 and is 79th at 244.
The final round goes today with the top four finishers making the Alberta team to compete at the national finals in Kitchener, Ont., Aug. 2-6. Alberta will have 14 spots at the nationals as well as five players who previously qualified.
Kallis and Lowe have previously qualified.
• CALGARY — Cara Vanderham of Innisfail shot an 85 Thursday during the third round of the provincial junior girls’ championship at Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club.
The 16-year-old is in a tie for 16th arb 254.
Kelly Amundrud of Calgary has control of first place heading into today’s final round, shooting a 69 to sit at 215 and maintain a five-stroke lead over Jennifer Ha of Calgary.
History made on McLennan Ross Sun tour
STRATHMORE — McLennan Ross Sun Junior Golf Tour history was made during a stop at the Strathmore Golf Club Wednesday.
Nine-year-old Brandon Brown of The Hamptons in Calgary earned a berth in the tour final, Aug. 31 at Wolf Creek, by shooting an 83 and finishing second in the 14-and-under division. What made Brown’s performance even more impressive was the fact all the boys played from the blue tees.
Brown, who turns 10 next week, finished five strokes back of Jake Mykitiuk of Calgary’s Glendale Club.
Theoren Olver of Three Hills was third at 84.
Lance Wesolowski of Chestermere won the overall title and the 17-19 year-old division with an even-par 72.
Nolan West of Rocky Mountain House tied for 10th overall with a 79 while Cole Niawchuk of Rocky tied for fourth in the 15-16 year-old division with an 83. Brandon Swanson of Calgary’s Country Hills won the division with a 73.
Katie Griffiths of Red Deer qualified for the tour final in the junior girls’ division, finishing second with a 110. Michi Buszkowski of Canmore shot a 106.
Braves swat Westlock
WESTLOCK — The Red Deer Carstar Braves scored twice in the fifth, sixth an seventh innings to break open a close game and register a 10-3 victory over the Westlock Legionnaires in NorWest Midget AAA Baseball League play Wednesday.
The Braves never trailed, leading 4-2 after two innings.
Brady Porter had a single and a double for the Braves, who finished with seven hits and nine walks.
Tyson Denham and Taze Steeves each drove in two runs while Scott Trapp scored twice.
Blair Mulder started on the mound, allowing two runs on two hits and five walks in two innings of work. Brett Littlefair picked up the win as he tossed four innings of three-hit ball allowing one run while walking three and fanning four.
Kalem Hamilton pitched a scoreless seventh inning, although he allowed a pair of hits.
Indians blank Clive
INNISFAIL — Matt MacLeod pitched a complete game four-hitter while striking out 13 as the Innisfail Indians downed the Clive Red Sox 6-0 in Parkland Baseball League play Wednesday.
Desmond Bouteiller and Noel Wyman drove in two runs each as the Indians ran their winning streak to three games.
Mosquitos host the province
Red Deer is hosting the Baseball Alberta Mosquito Tier III Provincials this weekend at Great Chief Park.
Red Deer #2 is the top-ranked team at the six-team tournament and they play their first game tonight against St. Albert #2 at 6:30 p.m. Their second game is Saturday at 6 p.m. against Westlock. Both of the game are at Fastball Diamond #1.
The tournament gets underway today at noon and continues Saturday at 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and then Sunday at 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Fort Saskatchewan, Lacombe and Okotoks are also participating.
Cougars advance to championship
MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — The Red Deer Canyon Cougars downed AKS 92 from California 7-2 to advance to the bantam gold division semifinals of the North American Roller Hockey championships Thursday.
The Cougars face the Pink Ponies from California in today’s semifinal.
In midget play the Red Deer Quinn Pump Snipers ran their pool play record to 4-0 by beating the Pittsburgh Mission Fusion 6-2 and Mississauga 4-1.
The Snipers advance to the quarter-finals.
