Evanecz representing Canada

Red Deer’s Mitch Evanecz and Raoul Menard of Ange-Gardien, Que., are representing Canada at the 85th Mexican men’s amateur in San Pedro Garza Garcia.

Evanecz tied for third in last year’s event, three strokes behind. Menard is making his first appearance in the amateur.

The pair are looking to become the first Canadian duo since Todd Halpen of Calgary and Kevin Fortin-Simard of Quebec in 2007 to win the team title. Last year’s team of Evanecz and Cory Renfrew of Victoria finished fourth.

The winner of the 72-hole event earned a berth in the U.S. men’s amateur.

The event opened Thursday, but results were unavailable.

Razorbacks hammer Dodgers

The Red Deer Goliath Razorbacks charged into an 8-0 lead after two innings and went on to down the Lacombe Dodgers 18-8 in Parkland Baseball League play in Lacombe Wednesday.

The Dodgers did make a game of it with seven runs in the third inning before the Razorbacks’ bats once again took over.

The Red Deer squad finished with 16 hits with Kevin Stelmaschuk collecting a single, double and triple. Don Von Hollen had a two-run home run and Brendan Huber added a solo shot. Brad Hank picked up the win in relief of starter Evan Emerson, working the final four innings, allowing two hits while fanning three.

The Razorbacks return home Friday at 7 p.m. against the Eckville Angels.
