Red Deer crew wins Play On street hockey tournament
A team of seven Grade 9 boys from St. Francis of Assissi Middle School won the U15 A division of the Hockey Night in Canada, Play On, Street Hockey tournament in Calgary during the weekend.
The Red Deer crew of Trey Degraaf, Andrew Nielsen, Micheal Pruss, Ross Heidt, Jayden Sittler, Allan Pruss and James Gaume beat out 26 other teams.
They won the final 11-1 over The Final Cut from Calgary.
Jacobson tops at Wolf Creek
PONOKA — Austin Jacobson of Ponoka was the top Central Albertan in the Canadian Junior Golf Association event at Wolf Creek Golf Resort during the weekend.
Jacobson shot a 42 in the rain-shortened nine-hole round Saturday then added a 74 Sunday for a 116 total, which left him fourth in the boys’ 15-19 year-old division of the Nike Golf Junior Series and Stephen Ames Cup qualifier.
Jesse Teron of Red Deer was fifth at (41-76) 117 with Kolby Vold of Ponoka tied for seventh at (44-76) 120 and Matt Codd of Red Deer tied for 16th at (49-75) 124.
Matt Williams of Calgary won the division with a (40-69) 109.
Patrick Murphy of Crossfield took top honours in the boys’ 14-and-under division with a (37-68) 105 total.
Brett Pasula of Red Deer tied for fourth at (45-86) 131.
Snowbirds fall in Medicine Hat
The Gary Moe Volkswagon Snowbirds dropped a 10-9 decision to Medicine Hat in the A-side semifinal at the nine-team 35-and-over baseball tournament in Medicine Hat during the weekend.
The Snowbirds were first in their round-robin pool.
Shaw scores three in losing effort
Brittany Shaw scored three tries in a losing cause as the visiting Red Deer Titans fell 60-50 to the Calgary Saracens in girls under-13/15 rugby action Saturday.
Rebekah Maciborsky and Elizabeth Maciborsky each added two tries for the Titans and Sydney Doan and Madison Howard had one apiece.
In under-13 boys play, the Titans got four ties from Johannes Smith in a 45-30 loss to the Foothills Lions at Okotoks. Ryan McLeod and Sheldon MacLeod each scored one try for the Titans.
Rage perfect in Calgary over weekend
The Red Deer Overdoor Rage posted a 3-0 record in midget A girls fastball action at Calgary during the weekend.
The Rage defeated teams from Calgary, St. Albert and Edmonton before the rest of their scheduled games were rained out.
