Titans fall in finale
The Red Deer Titans men’s rugby teams wrapped up their respective seasons Saturday, with both squads closing with losses.
The First Division Titans, ranked No. 7, were wiped out at St. Albert, falling 60-0 to the larger, second-ranked team while missing several key players. Meanwhile, the Titans III fell 35-14 to the Calgary Canucks, getting a try from Jeremy Humeniuk as well as a penalty try. Grady Bowd added two conversions for the Titans.
• The Titans U18 girls and boys teams will be in Kamloops for an Oct. 14-16 tournament. New players are welcome to join the teams.
• The Titans fall youth rugby program for boys and girls ages seven to 15 is underway with sessions Mondays and Thursdays at Titans Park. Close to 40 players from Olds, Rocky Mountain House, Innisfail, Sylvan Lake, Red Deer, Lacombe and Rimbey have signed up for the program and late registration is welcome.

Grizzlys maul Eagles in opener
The Olds Grizzlys opened their Alberta Junior Hockey League regular season in style Saturday, blanking the host Canmore Eagles 7-0.
Nicholas Bourgeois notched a pair of late second-period goals and also picked up an assist, while Taylor Bourne also tallied twice and Chad Berglund, Corbin Karl and Bart Moran added singles.
Brayden Hopfe posted the shutout with a 28-save performance. For the Eagles, Steve Papciak stopped 16 shots and Brady Rouleau blocked 11.
The Grizzlys are idle until Friday, when they host the Camrose Kodiaks in their home-opener at 8 p.m.
Lightning Thrashed
Matt Wildeman and Corben Weston each scored twice Sunday to lead the Three Hills Thrashers to an 8-3 Heritage Junior B Hockey League win over the host Stettler Lightning.
Ryan Layden, Calvin Main, Kyle Colonna and Clinton Nigh also tallied for the winners, while Reese Anneliger, Jake Schwarzenbencer and Kyler O’Connor replied for the hosts.
Three Hills goaltenders Shawn Nemeth and Tyler McLim combined to make 30 saves. Stettler netminders Quinton Bell and Max Schell teamed up to stop 25 shots.
