To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Red Deer Golf and Country Club the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour held its first Mini Tour stop at the facility.

The one-day event on July 7 featured talented golfers under 12 from across the prairies.

Eight-year-old Ain Lee from Sylvan Lake won the under-eight division after she shot 95 and 95.

“I felt very happy and proud, I even got a par at the end of my round. When things get stressful in a game, I just go hug my mom. This tournament was so fun, I met lots of new friends,” she said in a media release.

Red Deer’s Raylee Denton, 12, nearly won the girls 11-12 division but lost in a playoff to Calgary’s Sela Ogada. Despite losing a close matchup Denton still had an impressive round shooting 80 and 80.

Even though he shot four-under par in the boys nine-10 division, nine-year-old Edwin Park from Bentley finished in second place behind Edmonton’s Oscar Gosgnach.

In the boys 11-12, Bennett Love, 11, from Red Deer placed second behind Soloman Tong from Heritage Point after he shot 71 and 71.

The golfers will next head to Innisfail on July 13 for an MJT Mini Tour event.
