At the start of the third round, Mike McAdam led Brett Pasula by two strokes.

Four hours later, that’s how the two golfers ended. But it wasn’t a smooth ride for the Red Deer Golf and Country Club member.

“He had three birdies on the front nine and was up two and I had bogies,” said McAdam. “But I was patient and got birdies on 13 and 14, which was huge.

“I felt the nerves.”

The Notre Dame High School teacher won the Central Alberta Amateur on Monday after three rounds of competitive golf. The 94th annual tournament was held at the Red Deer Golf and Country Club.

McAdam shot a three day two-over, 75-69-74—218. It was two shots better than Pasula’s four-over 75-71-74—220.

This was McAdam’s second time playing the Central Alberta Amateur and his first win.

“First day I played OK,” said McAdam. “But I just couldn’t make my putts and bogied the two of the last three holes coming into the clubhouse.”

He finished the opening round with a 75, but bounced back in a big way on Sunday.

“I got out to a good start and birdied my first hole,” said McAdam, who had a shotgun start from the eighth hole on the second day.

“Through 18 I had four birdies. My goal was to get back to even and the 69 did that.”

That set up the showdown with Pasula in the final round.

“I started off kind of rocky, bogeying hole two and three,” said McAdam. “I parred myself all the way to 13 where I got a birdie. Brett dropped a stroke on 10 and we were tied.

“I chipped one in for birdie and he missed a birdie putt and I was up two going into 16.”

It was a lead McAdam never relinquished. Both McAdam and Pasula had tough 16s and coming into the last hole, McAdam knew he had a two stroke lead and was aiming for a par on the 18th.

Last year’s winner Kyle Morrison was eight shots back of McAdam tied for fourth place as he shot a 76-74-74—224.

Logan Hill came in third place at eight-over, 76-74-74—224.

Other top 10 finishes include: T4 Rob McWilliam (78-72-76—226), T4 Matt Codd (73-76-77—226), T7Gage Murphy (75-74-78—227), T7 Grant Numrich (73-77-73—227), 9 Brian Laubman (73-82-74—229), T10 Arthur Pendle (79-76-75—230), T10 Carter Graf (77-77-76—230) and T10 Tim Boston (79-75-76—230).
