ND boys fall in provincial opener

The Notre Dame Cougars turned in an impressive performance in the opening round of the provincial 4A high school boys’ basketball championship, but it wasn’t quite good enough.

EDMONTON — The Notre Dame Cougars turned in an impressive performance in the opening round of the provincial 4A high school boys’ basketball championship, but it wasn’t quite good enough.

The Cougars, who came into the tournament ranked 14th, dropped a 66-61 decision to third-ranked Bishop Grandin of Calgary Thursday.

Dario Viveros led the Cougars with 32 points while John Goranson added 16.

The Cougars meet the loser of the Western Canada-Foothills contest today at 1 p.m. in consolation play.

Meanwhile, the Hunting Hills Lightning were defeated 79-38 by fourth-ranked Spruce Grove in girls’ action.

Teighan Ponto had eight points for the Lightning, who face the host Ross Sheppard today at 3 p.m. Sheppard lost 69-37 to Western Canada.

• In 2A boys’ action in Didsbury the Rimbey Spartans opened with a 78-63 win over Calgary Christian as Spencer St. Denis had 28 points, Riley Properzi 22 and Kevin Vandenhoven 14.

The Spartans take on Didsbury today at 11 a.m.
