Penguins 2 at Maple Leafs 3 (OT)
Mikhail Grabovski scored 42 seconds into overtime to give the Toronto Maple Leafs a 3-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday night.
Grabovski took a nice pass from Phil Kessel, who tied it in the third period, and stuffed a shot behind Marc-Andre Fleury.
The Maple Leafs improved to 3-24-3 where they trail after two periods. More importantly, they moved within four points of eighth-place Carolina in the Eastern Conference. It was far from the best effort from a tired-looking Toronto team that still managed to improve to 9-2-4 since the all-star break.
Nikolai Kulemin also scored for the Maple Leafs.
Matt Niskanen and Chris Conner scored for Pittsburgh.
Lightning 1 at Devils 2
Ilya Kovalchuk scored his fifth winning goal in the last 11 games and New Jersey continued its amazing playoff push with a victory over Tampa Bay.
Martin Brodeur had 15 saves and Henrik Tallinder also scored as the Devils won for the 18th time in 22 games (18-2-2) and moved past Florida into 12th place in the Eastern Conference, nine points behind eighth-place Carolina. Dominic Moore scored for Tampa Bay, which had a three-game winning streak snapped, a run that included a win over New Jersey last week.
Kovalchuk’s 22nd of the season and eighth winner was set up by a great steal by Travis Zajac deep in the Tampa Bay zone. He intercepted a pass in the right circle and found Kovalchuk between the circles for a snap shot he launched falling to the ice.
Wild 1 at Islanders 4
Blake Comeau scored two goals and Al Montoya made 33 saves in non-taxing fashion to help New York beat sluggish Minnesota.
Comeau, who had gone seven games without scoring, gave the Islanders a 1-0 lead in the first period and a 3-0 edge in the second. Kyle Okposo and Andrew MacDonald added goals for New York.
Niklas Backstrom lasted only until 41 seconds into the second period. He was yanked in favour of Jose Theodore after giving up three goals on 19 shots. Theodore cleaned up for the Wild, outshot 41-34.
John Madden spoiled Montoya’s shutout bid with 8:27 left.
