Penguins 3 at Rangers 5
Ryan Callahan had two goals and an assist for the New York Rangers, who broke out of their offensive doldrums and snapped a six-game losing streak with a 5-3 victory over the battered Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday.
After falling behind 2-0 only 5:06 in, the Rangers tied it before the first intermission. They busted out in the second period — while recording 16 shots — on goals by Vinny Prospal, Callahan, and Artem Anisimov to build a three-goal lead. That was enough to end New York’s 0-5-1 skid that put the team’s playoff hopes in jeopardy.
The Rangers hadn’t won since beating Washington 2-1 in a shootout on Jan. 24.
New York’s rally was sparked by coach John Tortorella’s timeout called after Nick Johnson’s second NHL goal put Pittsburgh ahead by two. Hard-hitting Deryk Engelland gave the Penguins a 1-0 edge at 2:06.
Kings 1 at Flyers 0
Jonathan Quick stopped 40 shots and Drew Doughty scored to lead Los Angeles to its first regulation win in Philadelphia in nearly 18 years.
The Kings moved to 4-0-2 on their current 10-game road trip, which continues through Columbus, both New York teams and Anaheim through Feb. 23. The Eastern Conference-leading Flyers had won three straight.
Bruins 2 at Red Wings 4
Todd Bertuzzi scored two goals for the second straight game, lifting the Red Wings to the win.
Bertuzzi and Pavel Datsyuk had tying goals in the early going. Kris Draper had a go-ahead score midway through the second period and Bertuzzi sealed the victory with 6:25 left in the game.
Detroit’s Jimmy Howard made 23 saves.
Rookies Tyler Seguin and Brad Marchand gave the Bruins leads in the first period and Tim Thomas stopped 32 shots.
The Red Wings have won two straight, both against Boston, with a combined 10 goals after losing three of four and scoring a total of one goal in those setbacks.
The Bruins had won four of five before their back-to-back losses to the Red Wings.
Panthers 3 at Sharks 2
Jason Garrison and Chris Higgins scored in the third period, and Florida stopped a five-game home losing streak.
Mike Santorelli also scored and Marty Reasoner had two assists for the Panthers, who won for only the third time in their last 12 games (3-4-5). Higgins added an assist and Tomas Vokoun stopped 28 shots to improve to 10-0-1 in his last 11 starts against San Jose.
Joe Pavelski and Kent Huskins scored for the Sharks, who have lost two in a row after going 9-0-1 in their previous 10 games. Pavelski assisted on Huskins’ goal, and Torrey Mitchell had two assists.
Antti Niemi, who had given up four goals in his previous four starts, made 19 saves for San Jose, which outshot Florida 30-22.
Blue Jackets 2 at Stars 1
Rick Nash scored the go-ahead goal in the second period, Steve Mason made 29 saves, and surging Columbus matched a club record with its fifth consecutive road win.
Matt Calvert also scored for Columbus, which improved to 5-0-2 in its last seven road games.
Brad Richards picked up his 24th goal and Kari Lehtonen stopped 37 shots for the Stars, 2-6-1 in their last nine.
Nash gave Columbus a 2-1 advantage at 6:33 of the second, taking a pass from Jakub Voracek, skating in alone and sending a backhander past Lehtonen for his team-high 26th of the season and 15th of his career against Dallas.
Islanders 7 at Sabres 6, OT
Michael Grabner capped a three-goal game by scoring at 2:55 in overtime, leading the injury- and suspension-depleted Islanders to the victory.
John Tavares, Blake Comeau, Milan Jurcina and Ty Wishart also scored for an Islanders team that won its third straight and showed it still had some offensive punch left after a brawl-filled 9-3 win over Pittsburgh on Friday.
Kyle Okposo had four assists for the Islanders, who rallied from a 4-2 second-period deficit.
Drew Stafford scored three times for the Sabres, who had won a season-high three straight. It was his league-leading fourth three-goal game of the season and second in three outings. Tyler Ennis had three assists, while Jochen Hecht, Tyler Myers and Nathan Gerbe also scored for Buffalo.
Hurricanes 3 at Thrashers 2
Erik Cole scored with 1:19 remaining in the third period, helping Carolina snap a three-game losing streak.
The Hurricanes have won five straight over the Thrashers, including four in a row this season, and their last five at Philips Arena.
Cole beat Ondrej Pavelec from about 20 feet out for his 16th goal and the Hurricanes got a much-needed victory despite being outshot 43-17 in the game and 14-4 in the final period.
The Thrashers have lost 12 of 15 (3-8-4) and fell two points behind the Hurricanes in the battle for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
Atlanta tied it 2-2 on Andrew Ladd’s 19th goal and second of the game, beating Cam Ward only 26 seconds into the final period.
