Olympic Torch Relay road and intersection closures

On Friday Red Deer City RCMP will be closing roads and intersections to facilitate the Olympic Torch bearers as they run through the city.

Red Deer City RCMP will close roads and intersections briefly Friday evening to facilitate the Olympic Torch bearers as they run from Red Deer College to Westerner Park. The road closures will be in effect from approximately 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Police advise citizens to expect traffic delays if using Gaetz Avenue, 32nd Street or 19th Street for the duration of the Olympic Torch run. Use of alternate routes, such as Taylor Drive and 40th Avenue are recommended. RCMP anticipate that traffic flow will be slowed due to the increase in volume of vehicles and ask for everyone’s patience when traveling through Red Deer.

RCMP, Alberta sheriffs, City of Red Deer traffic enforcement officers, RCMP auxiliary constables and Red Deer Search and Rescue will be present during this event in order to ensure public safety, thus allowing for an enjoyable celebration of the Olympic Torch Run event.

Road closures:

• Northbound Gaetz Avenue will remain open during the Torch Run;

• 32nd Street from 55th Avenue to Gaetz Avenue: eastbound lanes from Red Deer College will be closed commencing at 6:05 p.m. This

closure will remain in effect for approximately 20 minutes, until the convoy turns southbound onto Gaetz Avenue;

• Gaetz Avenue from 32nd Street to 19th Street (inclusive):

southbound lanes will be closed, beginning at 6:15 p.m. This will remain in effect until 6:50 p.m. when the Convoy turns East onto 19th Street (Highway 595). All remaining portions of southbound Gaetz Avenue will be re-opened at that time;

• 19th Street (Highway 595) from Southpointe Common to Westerner Park: eastbound lanes will be closed from 6:45 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. It

will be re-opened once the Convoy arrives at the Westerner Park entrance off of 19th Street;

• Westbound lanes of 19th Street will remain open; allowing access to Highway 2.

Intersections Closures / Delays:

• 32nd Street and Taylor Drive: All lanes will be temporarily closed until the Convoy passes through the intersection;

• Gaetz Avenue and 28th Street: All lanes will be temporarily closed until the Convoy moves southbound through the intersection;

• Gaetz Avenue and 22nd Street: All lanes will be temporarily closed until the Convoy moves southbound through the intersection;

• Gaetz Avenue and 19th Street: All lanes will be temporarily closed until the Convoy passes through the intersection and turns eastbound onto 19th Street.

RCMP also advise that:

• all access to Gaetz Avenue southbound will be restricted to the West side Service Roads;

• those using the Southpointe Common areas during the Torch Run are asked to use westbound 19th Street, exiting onto Taylor Drive;

• all spectators of the Torch Run are asked to remain on the sides of the roadway;

• no one will be allowed to stand in the median between north and southbound lanes of Gaetz Avenue. This includes both the public and the

media;

• all entrance points onto Gaetz Avenue southbound between 32nd Street and 19th Street from the service roads will be barricaded and will be manned.
