Optimist Chiefs finish weekend 1-1

The Red Deer Optimist Chiefs evened their record with a strong effort Sunday in Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League play.

Red Deer finished the weekend 1-1, losing 4-2 against the Calgary Buffaloes Saturday, then earning a decisive 5-1 win over the Sherwood Park Kings Sunday.

They now sit fifth in the Chrysler Division with a 6-6-2 record.

Saturday in the loss, Ben Perreault and Avery Trotter had goals for Red Deer. Perrault also had an assist, along with Silas Buijs.

In the 5-1 win Sunday, Perrault led the way again with a pair of tallies. Jayden Henderson also had a strong contest, with a goal and two assists. Ty Daneault and Mark James also added goals. Tyler Mackenzie picked up a pair of assists, along with Trotter, Tyson Perkins, Andrew Wallace and Kaiden Ellertson all added an assist.

Logan Breen made 31 saves in the win.

Bantam AAA Rebels

The Red Deer Bantam AAA Rebels had their unbeaten streak snapped at 12 games Sunday. After starting the year, 11-0-1, the Rebels fell 3-1 Sunday to the Calgary Flames. Coy Pighin had the only goal in the loss.

Saturday, Red Deer shutout the Airdrie Xtreme 4-0. Brock Lott made 17 saves for his league-leading third shutout of the season.

Talon Brigley led the way with a pair of goals, while Quinn Sampson-Goodman and Colby Joyce also added goals.

Ephram McNutt, Keith McInnis and Pighin all had two assists in the win.

Midget AAA Female

The Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs suffered a pair of losses on the weekend in Alberta Female Hockey League play.

Saturday, they fell 3-2 to the Rocky Mountain Raiders. Kyla Hansel and Hailey Hoogkamp had goals in the loss and Ridleigh Hansen made 31 saves.

Friday, they lost 4-2 to the undefeated St. Albert Slash. Chloe Shingoose scored both goals and Callie Cocke added a pair of helpers.
