Optimist Chiefs lose game 2, on the brink against Royals

CALGARY– The Red Deer Optimist Chiefs are down to their last life in the Alberta Midget Hockey League playoffs.

The Optimist Chiefs dropped game 2 of the best-of-five series to the Calgary Royals and will need a win Monday at home to extend the series.

Cole Svenson scored on the power play and Jackson Zloty notched a short-handed goal that gave the Royals a 2-1 advantage after 20 minutes. Brett Meerman scored the first-period goal for Red Deer.

Tyler Winquist added another power play for Calgary in the second and Kalem Hanlon scored what proved to be the game-winner at 16:41 of the frame.

After the Royals added another goal early in the third, Red Deer battled back with goals from Hunter Leslie and Daylan Kuefler.

Duncan Hughes faced 29 shots in the loss. Red Deer battled penalty trouble in the game with nine minors in the contest.

Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs

The Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs concluded the Alberta Female Midget Hockey League regulation season with a shootout loss on Sunday in Edmonton.

The Edmonton Panadas earned the 2-1 win over Red Deer Sunday.

Kaley Mueller scored the only goal in regulation for Red Deer on the power play.

Grace Flanagan and Talia Teliani scored in the shootout for Edmonton. Teliani also had the regulation tally for the Pandas.
