The Red Deer Optimist Chiefs got back in the win column with five first period goals on the weekend.

Red Deer buried three times in the opening five minutes at home against the Calgary Buffaloes as they cruised to a 6-3 victory in Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League play.

Sawyer Senio had a pair of tallies in the first, while Sean Michalevich, Jackson Rider and Noah Danielson each added a goal in the first.

Daylan Kuefler also added a goal for the Chiefs in the second and Bretton Park made 26 saves in the win.

With the win, the Optimist Chiefs (16-4-6) are just two points back of the Lethbridge Hurricanes Midget AAA Hurricanes for first in the Chrysler Division.

The Optimist Chiefs play four home games in the first 10 days of February, with the first on Feb. 1 at 8 p.m. at Servus Arena.

The Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs won their last home game of the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League season Sunday.

Red Deer knocked off the Rocky Mountain Raiders 2-1, with goals from Vanessa Verbitsky and Kylie Perry. Chantelle Sandquist picked up the win in net for the Sutter Fund Chiefs.

With the Canada Winter Games quickly approaching, the Sutter Fund Chiefs will be on the road for the rest of the year.
