Optimists lock up first place

The Red Deer Optimist Rebels had first place in the Alberta Midget Hockey League’s South Division wrapped up when they took to the ice against the Edmonton Maple Leafs Sunday at the Arena.

The Red Deer Optimist Rebels had first place in the Alberta Midget Hockey League’s South Division wrapped up when they took to the ice against the Edmonton Maple Leafs Sunday at the Arena.

What they could do was concentrate on preparing for the playoffs and they did just that with a 6-3 win over the Maple Leafs.

Sam Jardine and Jarret Zentner scored for the Chiefs in the opening period as they jumped into a 2-0 lead. They extended their lead to 6-1 in the middle stanza as Justin Faux, Wyat Haustein, Kolton Gillett and Steven Makofka had single markers.

Netminder Mac Engel finished with 30 saves for the Rebels, who had 34 shots on goal.

The Rebels have three regular season games remaining this week and will receiver a bye in the first round of the playoffs.

Chiefs clinch second

The Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs locked up second place in the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League’s South Division with an impressive 8-0 win over the Grande Prairie Storm at the Kin City Arenas Sunday afternoon.

Camille Trautman made 25 saves for the shutout while Janelle Froehler scored three times and Morgan Brandl, Hannah Mousek, Jade Petrie, Chelsea Peterson and Rebecca Glackin once each. Petrie added three assists

The Chiefs will receive a first-round bye in the playoffs.

Rebels sweep

The Red Deer Rebels Black won one of three starts in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League during the weekend.

The Rebels downed the Calgary Bisons 7-6 Saturday while losing twice to the Calgary Bronks — 6-4 Friday and 8-1 Sunday.

Scott Ferguson had two goals against the Bisons with singles added by Spencer Yeats, Scott Feser, Jordan Steenburgen, Quinn Brown and Carson Jorgenson. Yeats and Jaden Svienson had two assists each while Matt Zentner made 334 saves in goal.

Logan Fisher had a pair of goals for the Rebels against the Bronks Friday with Ferguson and Svienson adding one each.

On Sunday, Scott Feser had the lone Red Deer goal.
