Ouellete and McDowell into semis at Alberta Match Play Championships

Two friendly foes are on a crash course to square off at the Alberta Match Play Championships.

Two friendly foes are on a crash course to square off at the Alberta Match Play Championships.

Central Alberta products Jace Ouellete and Chandler McDowell were winners in the opening two rounds of match play action at River Spirit Golf Club and will tee up Thursday in separate semifinals.

Ouellette, 19, from Red Deer but representing Innisfail Golf Club, is up against Max Sekulic of Rycroft.

In the other semi, Chandler McDowell of Springbrook, also representing Innisfail Golf Club will play defending champion Brendan MacDougall.

Ouellette opened the round of 16 with a 5 and 4 victory over Carter Lewis. In the quarters he knocked off Tyler Saunders 2 and 1.

In the opening round, McDowell dropped three of the first four holes but rallied to win six straight on the way to the 5 and 4 win over Owen Murray.

He edged Ethan de Graaf in the quarter-final 4&3 to advance to the semis.

Sylvan Lake product Carter Graf lost his opening match to de Graaf 3 and 2.

The semifinals will get underway at 7 a.m. Thursday, with the final to follow in the afternoon.
