The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens have bounced back with a win in the bronze quarterfinals.
On Thursday afternoon, Red Deer redeemed their semifinal loss from the day before with an 80-70 victory over the Mohawk Mountaineers. This also marked the first win in the tournament for Red Deer.
The Queens exploded in the first half with 46 points to the Mountaineers’ 37 heading into halftime. Red Deer continued their momentum into the second half including a 22-point fourth quarter.
As a whole, the Queens scored 32 points in the paint and 34 off of turnovers. They also got a big boost from their bench who contributed 26 points in the win.
Queens guard Sandra Garcia-Bernal won player of the game after posting 11 points, four rebounds, and four steals. For a second straight game, Sophie Melin led the way offensively with 17 points and five assists. Heena Sidhu and Sadie Jeffries were close behind with 12 points each.
With the win at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women’s Basketball National Championship in Hamilton, the Queens are off to the bronze semi-finals on Friday at 4 p.m. mountain time. They’ll play the loser between the Humber Hawks and the Geants de Saint-Jean.
