The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens team kept their home winning streak alive over the weekend.
In Alberta Colleges Women’s soccer action, the Queens knocked off the Medicine Hat College Rattlers 14-1 Saturday, followed by a decisive 5-1 win over the Lethbridge College Kodiaks Sunday.
Corbynn Fujimoto opened the scoring for the Queens just two minutes into the match before the Rattlers tied the game up at the 14-minute mark.
Head coach of the Queens Mahziar Peyrow said Fujimoto’s goal was a big goal for the club but thought his team was flat-footed for the first 20 minutes.
“It was frustrating to see at first. It was difficult for them to get anything they play a bit different than what we’re used to,” he said. “And we got a hold of it towards the end and they really stepped it up which is nice to see.”
Sein Furuyama, who finished with six goals, scored seven minutes later to take the lead and the Queens didn’t look back.
Peyrow said he has been really happy with Furuyama’s performance and wants to keep her momentum going. Furuyama was all smiles on Saturday even adding a couple of assists.
“Even when she’s missing she’s smiling just having a great time,” Peyrow said. “She has great potential… She’s doing extremely well and I’m proud of her for what she’s doing.”
This was the third game in a row where the Queens blew out their opponents in dominant fashion coming off a 16-0 win last weekend. Even though it’s great to see Peyrow doesn’t want them to get too overconfident.
“That’s what happened in the first 20 minutes of our game today. We settled in, they got on our heels, and we didn’t play the way we usually play with aggression coming out in the first right off the whistle…They can’t get stuck with the big heads, right? Because that’s what happens,” he added.
Fujimoto finished with a pair of goals and an assist while Grace Smith also fired one into the back of the net. Estel Quinteros had a goal and two assists while Alisha Coules also had one. Jaden Humphrey netted two goals and Jenica Swarts also scored a goal.
Furuyama added two more goals Sunday, while Fujimoto also added a tally. Grace Smith and Paige Kalbfleisch each also scored for RDP.
The Queens will travel to take on the Olds College Broncos Saturday, followed by a date with the SAIT Trojans on Sunday.
