With a bronze medal game birth on the line, the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens soccer team fell just short.
On Friday afternoon the Queens took on the Seneca Sting in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Championships in the bronze semi-final but were shut out 1-0.
However, the Queens came into the game major underdogs as the Sting were the number two nationally ranked team in the CCAA. The Sting were fresh off a 3-0 loss in the gold semi-final to the number one nationally ranked team. The Queens on the other hand beat the Les Rouges de Saint-Boniface 2-0 in the bronze quarter-final on Thursday.
Queens’ goaltender Abby Kotyk made some big saves in the first half to keep it tied after the first half. The Sting would get the lone goal of the match on the 68th minute scored by midfielder Olivia Lamacchia.
The Queens will finish off the weekend in the fifth and sixth-place match against the Humber Hawks at 8 a.m. mountain time.
