Queens 1 Thunder 0

In what was a battle of two heavyweights in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Association, the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens achieved the improbable by accomplishing a first in the institution’s history.

The Queens knocked off the Concordia University Thunder 1-0 Sunday in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Association provincial women’s soccer final to punch a ticket to the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association national championships. It was the first-ever ACAC title for Queens soccer.

RDP, who had been known for their offensive punch this season, executed a near-perfect match to take down the Thunder, who were ranked fourth in the country heading into the match and had only lost once this season in 12 games.

But the Queens were formidable in their own right, with only one loss on the ledger and they hadn’t conceded the opening goal all season– in fact, they hadn’t trailed since a game on September 10th against SAIT. The Queens kept that trend alive on Sunday.

In the 64th minute, RDP finally broke through for the game’s first and only goal. It was some great pressure from fifth-year captain Alisha Coules, who challenged the Thunder goalkeeper and snuck a shot just through to open the scoring.

RDP Queens second-year midfielder Sofia Quinteros was named player of the game for her outstanding effort in the midfield, shutting down the Thunder’s offence but also contributing to her own team’s offensive effort.

At the end of the match, Coules, Sein Furuyama, Kayla Yeo, and Estel Quinteros were named to the All-Tournament team. Midfielder Sofia Quinteros was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament.

The CCAA Soccer Championships will be hosted by Champlain College Saint-Lambert in Quebec Nov. 9-12. The Queens will take on the host Champlain College team in their opening match.
