RD U18 AAA Optimist Chiefs split weekend games in Lethbridge

The U18 AAA Red Deer Optimist Chiefs split their weekend series against the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

The two squads squared off in Alberta Elite Hockey League (AEHL) action which saw the Hurricanes take the first tilt 5-3 on Saturday and the Chiefs took the following game on Sunday 4-2.

Dominic Grieco, Rhett Miller, and Josh Perreault all scored for Red Deer on Saturday but it wasn’t enough to get them over the top. Goaltender Brock Lott made 13 saves on 18 shots in the effort.

On Sunday it was a different story for the Optimist Chiefs who scored a goal in each of the first two periods before notching a pair in the final frame. Spencer Claerhout, Jaxen Smyth, and William Jamieson all potted a goal in the win on the road. Goaltender Connor Baumbach made 17 saves on 19 shots to keep his team on top.

With the weekend set, Red Deer improved to a record of 7-10-2-1 and are nine points back of the second place in the South Division.

So far this season, Chase Christensen leads the team with eight goals and 19 points. He is also among the top of the league with three game-winning goals. Owen Callow leads the squad with 13 assists and is right behind Christensen with 17 points.

They will head back out on the road this weekend in St. Albert to take on the Raiders at 7:45 p.m. and on Sunday to take on the Oil Kings at 1:30 p.m.
