RDC Queens pick up 4-2 playoff win over NAIT

The RDC Queens started their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference best-of-three playoff series on the right foot Friday.

RDC opened the series in Edmonton at NAIT and topped the Ooks 4-2 to take a 1-0 series lead.

Kaely McMurtry and Kaitlan Linnell helped RDC jump ahead in the opening frame and Emily Lougheed notched a power play marker early in the second.

NAIT scored late in the second and midway through the third to make it close, but Jade Petrie iced the game with 54 seconds left.

Third-year goalie Tracie Kikuchi made 35 saves to earn the victory.

The Queens will look to wrap up the series Saturday night at home with puck drop set for 8 p.m. at the Collicutt.

RDC Queens volleyball

The RDC Queens failed to advance at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference Provincial Volleyball Championships on Friday.

The Queens dropped a heart-breaking five-set match to the Lakeland College Rustlers (25-16, 25-21, 22-25, 26-28, 15-9).

RDC had a two set lead over the Rustlers then lost a tight third and fourth set before dropping the fifth.

Noami Jardine had 18 kills in the loss, while McKenna Barthel chipped in 17 and Miranda Dawe had 13. Setter Chanelle Kayser had 53 assists.

The Queens will play for bronze Saturday afternoon.

RDC Kings Hockey

The RDC Kings closed in on the end of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference Men’s Hockey season with a win Friday night in Penhold.

The Kings topped the NAIT Ooks 4-1 in a critical contest with just one game remaining.

RDC scored four straight goals in the opening 40 minutes to put the game out of reach. Tyrell Mappin notched two in the first before Scott Ferguson struck twice on the power play in the second.

Second-year goalie Troy Trombley was solid in the victory with 23 saves.

RDC will round out the regular season with a game at NAIT on Saturday. With a win and a Grant McEwan University loss, the Kings could finish second in the ACAC standings.

RDC Kings Basketball

The RDC Kings rolled to a 92-66 victory over the St. Mary’s Lightning on Friday night.

RDC led by five at the half, but a massive 52-point final 20 minutes powered them to the win.

Kings forward Daniel Powell had a wild night with 42 points on 17-27 shooting and also chipped in 19 rebounds.

First-year Dshawn Tyrell also had a solid night with 15 points and five rebounds. Eric Bakker added 11 points in the win.

The Kings host the Lightning Saturday night in the RDC main gym at 8 p.m.

RDC Queens Basketball

The Queens fell 73-61 to the St. Mary’s Lightning on the road.

Third-year guard Eva Bonde led the way for RDC with 18 points, five rebounds and four assists. Third-year forward Emily White added 11 points and 13 rebounds in the loss. Rookie Sandra Garcia-Bernal also 10 points.

The Queens will play their final home game on Saturday with tip-off at 6 p.m.
