CAMROSE- The RDC Queens overcame a heartbreaking loss on Saturday to pick up bronze at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference Women’s Volleyball Championships.

The Queens had their eyes on the gold medal match heading into the tournament, but after a tough five-set loss to the Lakeland College Rustlers Friday, RDC was forced to fight for bronze.

They took down The King’s University Eagles in three straight sets (25-15,25-23, 25-18) and earned a third-place finish in the province.

“I’m extremely proud of our bounce back today,” said Queens head coach Chris Wandler.

“That game last night was extremely close between two really good teams and we battled hard and long. Would have wished it went in a different direction. We could have folded our tents this afternoon. We have a lot of pride in the group and a lot of girls who have been with us a long time. Very proud of their effort.”

Fourth-year outside hitter Naomi Jardine led the way for RDC with 10 kills, 10 digs, an ace and a stuff block in the match.

Offensively, fifth-year Miranda Dawe was also key in the win with 10 kills.

“We did it because we’re a character group and that’s what good people do,” Wandler said about the bronze medal win.

“We just played like we have the last month. Good, solid volleyball and we had a good demeanour. Very tactical and very execution oriented. That’s just the way we’ve done things the last couple weeks.”

Fourth-year McKenna Barthel did everything for the Queens, with a game-high 15 points. She had 10 digs, six stuff blocks, and three aces to go along with her six kills.

In her final RDC game, Megan Schmidt was player of the game and had a strong showing with seven kills.

“The leadership of the group is rock solid. With a very veteran-laden team, no one takes it upon themselves to handle it all alone. With that, it makes the lifting that much easier,” Wandler added.
