Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics announced that cross-country runners Melissa Ray and Jordan Coen were named the Athletes of the Week.
Ray, a fourth-year nursing student from Three Hills, Alta., led the Queens in their first Running Room Grand Prix of the season in Edmonton over the weekend.
She helped the Queens to a first-place finish after finishing sixth in the six-kilometre race at 27:32. After taking a brief absence from ACAC competition, Ray has returned this year as a key member of the Queens' cross-country program.
Coen, a third-year kinesiology student from Grimshaw, Alta., helped the Kings cross-country team after placing sixth in the eight-kilometre race in 30:47. His efforts helped the Kings place third in the first Grand Prix with 63 points.
Coen was named team captain and will have a major role this season as a leader.
This weekend both the Kings and Queens cross-country teams will not participate in the second Grand Prix in ACAC action but will prepare for the third event on Sept. 21 in Lethbridge.
