RDP Kings, Queens basketball win at home

Red Deer Polytechnic had a successful weekend against the Ambrose University Lions in Alberta Colleges Athletic Association action.

The Kings and Queens basketball teams knocked off the Lions at home, while both volleyball teams earned road wins in Calgary.

In a 79-56 win, Amy Szymanek had a huge night for the Queens with a game-high 23 points. She also added five rebounds, four steals and one assist.

Lauren France chipped in 13 points off the bench, along with three rebounds and a steal. Sandra Garica-Bernal was also big for the Queens with 10 rebounds and 10 points, as well as four steals and one assist.

The Queens shot 70 per cent from the free throw line, 44 per cent from three-point range and 53 per cent from the field.

Also at home, the Kings won a nail-biter in overtime against the Lions, 92-91.

RDP trailed 62-60 heading into the fourth quarter but outscored the Lions 22-20 in the final period to send the game to overtime. In overtime, the Kings outscored Ambrose 10-9.

Brazilian forward Eduardo Crespo played 41 minutes in the contest, posting 34 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and one steal. Crespo was player of the game for the Kings. Issac Gray, who had 34 points for Ambrose, also earned player of the game honours.

Bernardo Moller chipped in 15 points in 33 minutes of action off the bench, along with seven rebounds, five assists, 2 steals and one block.

The Kings shot 54 per cent from the field, 36 per cent from three and 48.5 from the free throw line.

On the road, Queens volleyball earned a three-set sweep over the Lions. Lauren Junck led the way with 10 kills, one ace, one dig and one stuff block. Middle Kira Weddell had eight kills and Sydney Rix chipped in seven. Rix also had two aces in the win.

The win snapped a three-match losing streak for the Queens.

The Kings needed four sets (25-23, 23-25, 25-20, 25-14) to dispatch the Lions. Noah Carlson led the way for the Kings with 16 kills, while Red Deer’s own Colby Nemeth had 14 kills in the victory. Setter Maddux picked up 41 assists.

It was the 11th win in a row for the Kings, who were second in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Conference rankings heading into the week.

The Kings and Queens travel to Calgary to play the SAIT Trojans for a pair of matches next weekend.

On the ice at home, the RDP Kings fell 5-2 to the SAIT Trojans.

SAIT opened the scoring on the power play in the first and made it 2-0 while the ice was still wet in the second. Jacob Kendall cut the deficit for the Kings late in the frame, but the Trojans notched a pair 1:26 apart in the third to open up a 3-1 lead.

Nolan Doell scored for the Kings with 1:27 left in the game.
