The Red Deer Polytechnic Men's Volleyball team continued to roll to start the Alberta Colleges Athletic Association season.
The Kings won a pair of home matches over the weekend, sweeping the Lakeland College Rustlers in three sets, before taking down the Keyano College Huskies three sets to one (24-26, 25-22, 26-24, 25-23) on Saturday.
Saturday's win was a monster match for Red Deer's Colby Nemeth. The fourth-year outside hitter 32 kills to lead the Kings to victory. Kings setter Brett Thiese had 42 assists in the win.
In a homecoming of sorts, Red Deer's Brody Kopec led the way for the Huskies with 14 kills.
The Kings are 4-0 on the season and after a week off, will take on the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder on Nov. 15 in Edmonton.
The Queens dropped a heartbreaking five setter (25-15, 25-23, 25-27, 24-26, 11-15) to the Huskies Saturday.
Third-year outside hitter Lauren Junck of Red Deer led the way for the Queens with 15 kills, five digs and two aces. Third-year outside hitter Sarah Mistol also had a strong night with 13 kills. Fourth-year middle Autumn Roos of Ponoka finished the match with 12 kills and five blocks.
Queens setter Maria Brouwer had 34 assists in the loss.
The Queens also have a week off before taking on the Thunder on Nov. 15.
The RDP Kings hockey team also earned a dominant victory over the weekend, downing the Thunder 6-1 in Edmonton. RDP had a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes, with even strength goals from Alex Bernauer, Tristan Baumung and Liam Stalwick. Holden Knights added to the lead at 9:12 of the second before Tanner Sklaruk and Ryland McNinch padded the lead in the third.
Knights had a three-point evening with a goal and two assists, while Easton Haygarth also added two assists in the victory. Kings third-year goalie Evan Fradette had 26 saves in the win.
The Kings will aim for their fourth straight victory on Friday when they take on the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings Friday night at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre, with puck drop set for 7 p.m.
Both Kings and Queens basketball teams are off next weekend, before returning to their home court on Friday, Nov. 15 against the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder.
