The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings have won six matches in a row and are the top team in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association.
RDP knocked off the Briercrest College Clippers in a pair of matches over the weekend, winning 3-1 (25-22, 17-25, 25-15, 25-15) on Friday and 3-0 (25-14, 15-16, 25-16) on Saturday.
In Saturday's win, Colby Nemeth led the Kings with 13 kills, 2 aces and one block. The dynamic fourth-year outside hitter from Red eer leads the Alberta Colleges Athletic Association with 4.53 kills per set.
Red Deer's Brett Lower also had nine kills in the victory and setter Brett Theise had 22 assists.
The Queens lost a tough five-set on Saturday against the Clippers. RDP won the first set 25-20, lost the second 25-15 and the third 25-22, before evening the match with a 25-20 win in the fourth game. In the fifth, the Clippers won 15-5.
Outside hitter Lauren Junck led the Queens with 14 kills and three aces. Autumn Roos and Rachel Perry each chipped in 10 kills. Setter Maria Brouwer had 24 assists in the loss.
The Queens are third in the ACAC South with two matches remaining. They are tied two points back of the Clippers for second and two back of the Ambrose University Lions, who have played all 19 of their matches.
The Kings sit first in the ACAC South, two points up on the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks.
The Kings and Queens will finish the regular season with a home-and-home series against the Olds College Broncos. They'll travel to Olds Friday, before hosting the Broncos on Saturday. The Queens match will start at 6 p.m. Saturday, with the Kings to follow.
Queens basketball lost its third and fourth games in a row over the weekend to the Clippers at home. Breicrest won 66-61 Friday and 51-45 on Saturday.
In Saturday's loss, Salome Nuako led the way for the Queens with 12 points, seven rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Zoey Longman chipped in 10 points off the bench, and added two rebounds and one steal. Rachel Harvey had eight points and 14 rebounds in the loss for the Queens.
The Queens shot 28.8 per cent from the field, 22.2 per cent from three and 70 per cent from the free-throw line.
The Kings also lost twice on the weekend to the Clippers. Friday, Briercrest earned a 116-111 win and Saturday, they knocked off the Kings 93-89.
In Saturday's four-point loss, Deandre Rowe had a big night for the Kings. In 37 minutes, Rowe had a game-high 27 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals.
José Mauro Barrozo Júnior had a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds, along with three blocks, two steals and one assist. Felix Webb also pitched in 14 points off the bench in 12 minutes of action.
Both the Kings and Queens will round out the regular season against the Broncos. RDP will host Olds on Feb. 14, with the Queens tipping off at 6 p.m. and the Kings to follow. The two teams will play in Olds on Saturday night.
Queens hockey also earned a pair of wins on the weekend, beating the SAIT Trojans 2-1 in overtime on home ice Friday, followed by a 5-1 win on Calgary Saturday.
In Saturday's win, five different Queens scored. Arilyn Toews, Fiona Sirovyak, Kaedence Mollin, Rylee Mepham and Avery Winchell each had goals. Tora Ward made 25 saves in the victory.
The Queens have four games remaining. The will play Medicine Hat on the road twice, and wrap up the ACAC regular season with a home-and-home series against the Olds College Broncos.
