The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings defeated the Lakeland College Rustlers in five sets on Saturday to claim the bronze medal at the ACAC Men’s Volleyball Championship.

It was a back-and-forth affair that saw the Kings pull out a slim 15-11 victory in the fifth and final set at Olds College.

Before that, the Kings claimed the first set 25-17 before the Rustlers responded 15-25 in the second. Red Deer came back to win 25-21 in the third set, but Lakeland extended the game, winning the fourth set 23-25.

Kings Noah Carlson was dominant on the court with 24 kills and Jonathan Graham had 14 digs on the defensive end. Carlson was also named tournament all-star.

Meanwhile, the Queens fell in the bronze medal game at the ACAC Women’s Volleyball Championship.

At Lethbridge College, the Queens were shut out 3-0 by the Briercrest College Clippers on Saturday afternoon, losing 25-22, 25-16, and 25-18.

Queens Jaiden Ferguson led the way with 12 kills followed by Emma Holmes with eight kills. Meanwhile, Francesca Sandini came away with 14 digs.

Despite losing in the ACAC playoffs, the Queens season is not over yet. They’ll now prepare to host the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women’s Volleyball National Championships from March 6-9 at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.
