Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics named Queens volleyball outside hitter Rachel Perry and Kings hockey forward Chance Longjohn the Athletes of the Week.

Perry was a major contributor for the Queens at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Women’s Volleyball National Championship held last week in Red Deer.

In the quarter-finals, Perry notched seven kills, five digs, four aces, one assist, and two blocks in a victory over the Humber College Hawks.

The Grande Prairie, product led the team with 19 points in the semi-finals against the Vancouver Island University Mariners, which ended in a five-set loss for Red Deer.

Despite that, she was named player of the match for contributing 12 kills, seven blocks, and five digs. She kept her momentum in the bronze semi-finals leading the way with 13 kills despite falling to the Nordiques de Lionel-Groulx in four sets.

Longjohn, who serves as team captain, helped lead the Kings to their second straight appearance in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference men’s hockey finals.

Over the weekend he played a huge role in sweeping the Alberta-Augustana Vikings in the ACAC semi-finals best-of-three series.

In Game 1 he contributed an assist and later scored the game-tying goal in a 3-2 win at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.

In Game 2 on Saturday they hit the road in Camrose where Longjohn scored a shorthanded goal for the Kings en route a 6-2 blowout victory.

With the win, they advanced to the ACAC Men’s Hockey Championship to play a five-game series against the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder.

If the Kings win the championship it’ll be the first time they’ve won back-to-back titles since the 1976-78 seasons.
