The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens played a complete game on Friday afternoon.

At the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Women’s Basketball National Championships, the Queens defeated the Humber Hawks 81-72 in the bronze semifinals to advance to the medal game in Hamilton, Ont.

After the first half, the two teams were neck and neck but Red Deer had the slight upper hand leading 40-38. In the second half, the Queens continued to click on offence including a 23-point fourth quarter to close out the game.

Queens Amy Szymanek led the way on offence with 21 points on nine of 16 shooting from the field. Heena Sidhu also had a productive afternoon with 17 points shooting seven for 15 in the effort.

Sandra Garcia-Bernal had a big game on both ends of the floor with 15 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and five steals.

As a whole, the Queens had plenty of high-quality scoring chances shooting nearly 45 per cent. Thirty-four of their points came from in the paint and 20 were off turnovers.

The bronze medal game will take place on Saturday at 3 p.m. mountain time. Red Deer will play either the Augustana Vikings or the Dawson Blues for third place in the tournament.
