RDP Queens basketball wins first game of the season

Rematch will be on Saturday

In their third game of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Association (ACAC) the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens basketball team got their first win of the season against the Medicine Hat Rattlers 72-34.

The Queens dominated on both ends of the court at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre including an offensive explosion of 23 points compared to the Rattlers five points in the first quarter. After an close second quarter, the Queens came out in the second half and scored at will. They finished the third quarter with 20 points and added 21 in the final frame.

The Queens were led by Amy Szymanek who finished with 19 points, 11 rebounds, and five steals on seven-for-16 shooting from the field. Sophie Melin also had a big game with 13 points and five steals on six-for-14 shooting. Peighton Melton contributed 11 points and 10 rebounds off the bench in the win.

The Kings were next up Friday night but lost to the Rattlers 90-87 in overtime in an exciting battle.

Next up for the Queens and Kings is a rematch on Saturday against the Rattlers at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.
