The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens hockey team came away with a close 3-2 victory at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre to win their home opener over the SAIT Trojans.
The Queens scored two in the first period by Kassy Gaudette and Jailyn Bablitz to take a 2-0 lead early. After a scoreless second period, the Queens extended their lead 3-0 just three minutes into the frame off the stick of Avery Lajeunnesse.
The Trojans scored two within minutes of each other midway through the third but it wasn’t enough to make a comeback.
Goaltender Madison Fox made 17 saves in the contest in her first game of the year. The Queens now improve to 2-0 and will play next against NAIT in Edmonton on Friday, Nov. 4.
