The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens postseason run to the 2023 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Women’s Basketball Nationals came to an end on Saturday.

In a head-to-head matchup with the Dawson College Blues on Saturday in the bronze medal game, the Queens came up short 87-70 in Hamilton, Ont.

The two teams also met in the first game of the tournament when the Blues edged the Queens 68-51 in the quarterfinals. The Queens were hoping to avenge the early tournament loss but in the end, they were unable to do so.

In the first period, the Blues were firing on all cylinders punishing the Queens with 29 points. Despite Red Deer adding 23 points in the second quarter the Queens never seemed to recover getting outscored in every period except in the fourth.

Team captain Sophie Melin led the way offensively with 25 points followed by Amy Szymanek with 13 points and four rebounds. Heena Sidhu posted 12 points, four rebounds, and five steals.

In the final game of the Queens season, they finished fourth in the tournament with a campaign. The Queens season had plenty of ups and downs including a 15-game winning streak they rode into nationals. And after losing in the quarterfinals they won two straight to make it to the bronze medal game.
