Queens 5 Vikings 0
Home sweet home.
The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens soccer team took care of business on Saturday in their home opener of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) season.
The Queens blanked the Alberta-Augustana Vikings 5-0 at Red Deer Polytechnic to improve to 2-1 in league play.
Red Deer had five different goal scorers including the first by captain Sofia Quinteros off the pass from Kayla Yeo in the 30th minute.
A minute later first-year defender Payton Erick from Devon, Alta. put the Queens up by two assisted by Paige Kalbfleisch.
In the second half, the Queens picked up where they left off. Lacombe’s Anessa Harrod, who’s also in her first year, scored in the 66th minute from Grace Smith.
First-year forward Rylyn Morse from Sylvan Lake added the fourth followed by second-year Erica Navarro knocking in the Queens’ fifth goal.
Following the game, Navarro, who won player of the game, was ecstatic to score her first goal of the ACAC season.
“We got it down the wing and Quinn (Daku) she passed it… I honestly didn’t think it was going to go in. I just tried to shoot it as hard as I could. I think it hit the post and it went in. I heard the little ting and I was happy,” she said.
“Actually, last year my first ACAC goal was against Augustana so my mom was like, ‘You need to score two today.’ I only scored one but I’m glad we won.”
Queens’ head coach Mahziar Peyrow said Navarro played well throughout the whole match.
“She was a key player throughout the middle and that’s what we needed. We needed somebody to distribute the ball properly so she showed well… She stretched the play for us which was nice and the finish at the end was the icing on the cake,” he added.
Peyrow explained despite recording their second win of the season, he felt they played outside of their game.
“Which was kind of frustrating for us. We needed to stretch the play and play our formation a little better,” Peyrow said. “They took us out of shape but we were able to put some goals away and it started to get things moving for us which was nice to see.”
The Queens lost 4-1 to SAIT on Sunday, with Grace Smith notching the only goal for RDP in the 79th minute. Isabel Vega scored twice for SAIT, with Olivia DePasquale and Meaghan Wiebe also scoring for the Trojans.
The Kings fell 7-1 on the road Sunday. Ajdin Sarcevic scored the lone Kings goal in the 59th minute. Rinor Hoxha had a hat trick for the Trojans.
Next Saturday, Sept. 23 they’ll both host Ambrose University at noon and 2 p.m. at Red Deer Polytechnic.
