Queens 2 Les Rogues 0
The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens road to a national college women’s soccer medal isn’t dead yet.
The Queens bounced back Thursday morning in the bronze quarter-final with a 2-0 win over the Manitoba champion Les Rouges de Saint-Boniface at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships in Quebec.
This came a day after they lost to the host Champlain Saint-Lambert Cavaliers 1-0.
The Queens scored just over a minute into the match when Queens Kayla Yeo passed the ball over the top of the defender to Alisha Coules who picked the top corner to score Red Deer’s first goal of the tournament. Coules was robbed late in the first half on a golden opportunity but the Les Rogues’ keeper got her fingertips on the ball to keep it out of the net.
Toward the end of the first half, the Queens prevented their opponents from tying the game after Les Rouges were awarded a free kick. Queens’ goaltender Danyelle Bouvier made a great save to keep the Queens on top.
The Queens added another goal early in the second half to go up 2-0 when striker Jaeden Swartz fired one past the goaltender who came out to contest the pass made by Estel Quinteros.
With the win, the Queens will now play Friday at 1 p.m. mountain time in the bronze semi-final against either the Seneca Sting or the Aigles d’Ahunstic.
