After a pair of losses in Calgary on Saturday, the Kings and Queens soccer teams responded in their home openers on Sunday.

The Queens won a 3-0 contest over the Olds College Broncos, meanwhile, the Kings tied the Broncos 1-1 later that afternoon.

The Queens were led by fifth-year forward Alisha Coules who scored two goals in the first half.

Coules took last year off from suiting up for the Queens and joined the coaching staff as an assistant coach but has returned to the lineup for her final season.

Midfielder Paige Kalbfleisch scored the first goal for the Queens one minute into the game followed by Coules at the five-minute and 39th minute mark.

The Queens were strong defensively and held the Broncos to just three shots on goal, all of which goalkeeper Jana Leskewich stopped.

For the Kings, their opponents got on the board first just 10 minutes into the match when Broncos midfielder Nanshon Ranger-Reece scored to take the lead. However, Red Deer responded with the equalizer scored by fourth-year midfielder Ajdin Sarcevic at the 20-minute mark of the first half.

No one broke the tie in the second half and both goalkeepers stood tall. Kings goalie Brian Murray made four saves on five shots and Broncos goaltender Declan Kavgadoulis made six saves on seven shots.

This weekend the Kings and Queens will hit the road to take on the Medicine Hat College Rattlers at 2 and 4 p.m. on Saturday followed by the Lethbridge College Kodiaks on Sunday at noon and 2 p.m.
