The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens came out on top in Game 1 of the ACAC Women’s Hockey semi-finals series.

They took down the NAIT Ooks 3-2 in Red Deer at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre on Friday night.

After a scoreless first period, the Queens took a 2-0 lead in the second period on goals from Julie Wagner on the powerplay and Hayley Kolosky.

NAIT’s Jessica Engelbrecht scored with less than a minute left in the period and again on the powerplay in the third to tie it at two.

However, the Queens restored their lead 30 seconds later and that was all they needed to secure the victory.

Red Deer goaltender Izzy Palumbo was fantastic in net making 30 saves on 32 shots.

The Queens now have an opportunity to advance to the ACAC Women’s Hockey Championship finals with a win on Saturday in Edmonton at 6 p.m.

If needed, Game 3 will be back in Red Deer on Sunday at 7 p.m. to decide the best-of-three series.
